Night Camp Themes

The Phoenix Zoo is excited to offer six new Night Camp programs! These programs are all aligned to Arizona Department of Education Academic Standards and Next Generation Science Standards. The new programs fall under two categories: Night Camp Investigators and Night Camp Explorers.

Night Camp Explorers

Campers in the Night Camp Explorers programs use basic orienteering skills to guide their experience around the Zoo. Groups are given maps, a set of compasses and clues which are used to navigate Zoo trails and guide campers on an animal adventure.

Three different programs are available. Each is designed for specific age groups and aligned to Arizona State Academic Standards/ Next Generation Science Standards.

  • Night Camp Explorers: Life Cycles
    • Recommended for grades 3 and younger.
    • At each station, the campers will focus on one of the following animal classes: mammals, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and insects, discussing their traits and life cycles.
  • Night Camp Explorers: Food Webs
    • Recommended for grades 3 through 6
    • In this program, campers will focus on the following trophic levels: producers, primary consumers, secondary consumers, tertiary consumers, and decomposers, how they interact with the other levels, and their overall importance within a food web.
  • Night Camp Explorers: Careers with Animals
    • Recommended for grades 6 through 12
    • Campers in this program will explore the following career options throughout their camp experience: animal behaviorists, zoo keepers, veterinarians, field biologists, and conservation biologists.

Night Camp Investigators

Campers will become true scientific investigators in this exciting camp! Within the Night Camp Investigator programs, campers will go through the scientific inquiry process, as they investigate a question of their choice through observation, data collection, and discussion. There are three Night Camp Investigator programs, each designed with a specific age group in mind.

  • Night Camp Investigators: Nocturnal
    • Recommended for grades 3 and younger
    • Campers will explore the adaptations of nocturnal animals and how they compare to that of diurnal animals through inquiry-based learning.
  • Night Camp Investigators: Desert Survival
    • Recommended for grades 3 through 6
    • Using the scientific inquiry process, campers will examine the adaptations that allow animals to survive in a harsh desert environment, with a focus on local species.
  • Night Camp Investigators: Conservation
    • Recommended for grades 6 through 12
    • Through a series of scenarios, campers will investigate and discuss specific conservation issues, and begin to understand the challenges that conservationists face while finding ways that they can make a difference as well.
