The Phoenix Zoo has developed a new Comprehensive Master Plan to build a World Class Zoo for a World Class City – a zoo that exceeds the expectations of our 21st century guests for an intense, engaging animal and nature-based experience.
Fifty years old in 2012 (Arizona’s Centennial), the Zoo is planning for Arizona 2050 and its role in providing nature-based play and education for an increasingly urban society.

The Plan focuses the Zoo’s mission and operations on satisfying the recreational desires and exotic animal curiosity of our current and future visitors, and the community’s need for such and experience by providing:

  • Spectacular new and improved animal exhibits

  • A more compact footprint of our core animal collection that provides guests a more convenient and intense animal viewing experience

  • Increased opportunities for fun and engaging educational activities that put children in touch with nature

  • A modern and adequately sized infrastructure to support the Zoo as it grows with the community over the next 50 years

  • State of the art amenities for guests

To achieve World Class status will require a significant commitment and investment.

The Plan calls for $20 million in the first five years to achieve the goals stated above, as well as public investment in water, sewer, electrical and communications infrastructure to accommodate the exhibit and amenity investment.
