As one of the largest non-profit, privately funded zoological parks in the country, The Phoenix Zoo relies exclusively on its own earned income and the support of members, donors and the local corporate community to provide funds for operations and capital improvements of exhibits and guest experiences.

The following items listed are things that your Zoo needs. You can donate gently used items or contact the Development department at 602.286.3830 to make a monetary donation for us to make the purchases. All donations are tax deductible as permitted by the law.

Komodo dragon’s need:

  • 5' x 5' Sandboxes by SandLock Sandboxes- for their stalls. This would provide an area of mulch for digging and sleeping on.

Hoof stock area needs for the daily maintenance and care of giraffes, rhinos, warthogs, bighorn, and many more:

  • Cordless 18 volt drill
  • Cordless Reciprocating Saw
  • Wet/Dry Shop Vac
  • 2 Electric Cordless Blowers
  • 2 Electric Blowers
  • 3 pairs of Loppers
  • Screw Driver Set

Children’s Trail exhibits can use:

  • Sod- This is used for Behavioral Enrichment purposes. Padfoot the Ocelot likes to lay in it and sometimes he eats a little of it. The birds will pick at it and we sometimes will throw insects(crickets or worms) in it which gives them extra Behavioral Enrichment. The Calamian Deer like to browse on it and it is nice and soft for them to lie on.

Elephant keepers need:

  • Skid Steer Loader- This is a type of tractor that is much needed to move sand and logs from one place to another to make our Elephants home different and make it a better one each day. This also will keep our elephant’s feet healthy as adding sand to the area makes the terrain softer on their feet.
  • Heavy Duty Elephant Bungee- This item is used for Behavioral Enrichment (toy for the Elephants) and is special ordered. You can make a monetary donation of $650 by calling 602.286.3830.
  • Elephant Hanging Ball- This item is used for Behavioral Enrichment (toy for the Elephants) and is special ordered. You can make a monetary donation of $1,200 by calling 602.286.3830.

 

 

Behavioral Enrichment for the animals:
Equine area

 Animal Care Center

  • DVDs –animal related, comedy, kids (for animals of all kinds to have visual and audio stimulation while at hospital)
  • Storage shed 8’x10’, with floor/installation (BE shed for hospital animals. We have a huge variety of BE and no central storage place)
  • Parrot toys of all sizes (our Aracari loves to play with them!! Can always use new toys for birds that rotate through hospital; they are guaranteed clean!)
  • Milk crates- plastic (for arboreal animal can be hung on wall as basket or multi-level shelf, or can provide higher flat perch for a ground animal)

Animal Resources needs:
Monetary donations to order specific enrichment toys such as:

  • 14” klinker balls
  • Snack balls
  • Raisin balls
  • Tire swing
  • Rock climb
  • Ladder
  • Heavy duty bells
  • Large bobbin w/ cable
  • Kong toys
  • Hollee roller

Volunteers are in need of:

  • Power Point Projector- for training purposes

The following items are to be used in interactive stations around the Zoo by Volunteers and Zoo Teens:

  • Replica giraffe skull
  • Replica eagle, hawk or owl skull
  • Replica parrot skull
  • Replica heron skull
  • Replica hummingbird skull
  • Replica spoonbill skull
  • Replica elephant tooth
  • Gibbon hand life cast

Accounting Department needs:

  • Cash Counter- volunteers and staff who handle money can finish quicker if they had a Cash Counter.

Operations staff members are in need of:
For repairs on Zoo grounds-

  • 18 volt  Dewalt cordless sawsall
  • 18 volt  Dewalt cordless ½ inch drill
  • 18 volt  Royobi cordless drill ½ inch
  • 18 volt  Royobi cordless sawsall

For maintenance-

  • 8 foot and 10 foot fiberglass “A” frame ladders rated for at least 300 lbs user weight

For grounds keeping-

  • Heavy duty steel handle shovels < point and square >
  • Steel rakes

To run compressors and equipment in the field-

  • Heavy duty extension cords 15-25 ft min 14 gauge  prefer 12 gauge wire

For area’s with no power in field-

  • Portable 1800 – 2400 watt generator, gas or 2 cycle

To light up in the dark-

  • 2 -3 D cell steel flashlights <mag lights>

Park Rangers need:

  • 18-inch orange safety cones- these are used inside the zoo to convey safety areas as well as used in the parking lot to guide and assist guests with parking

Public  Special Events department needs:

  • Electric cordless drill – to help us install event signage
  • 15’x15’ Storage shed to store event supplies
  • 20-30 gallon size Large storage bins –– to store event supplies
  • Walk-about walkie-talkies – to communicate with event volunteers

Programs department needs:

  • Vacuum- to clean the offices preferably bag less.
